Geographers have had much to say about the pitfalls of development. That it remains hierarchical and culturally inflected, operating on racialised, gendered and class lines, has made it somewhat of an easy target. But what lies beyond the safe confines of critique? What might ‘doing development’ look like if academic work was to deliver more radical and embodied purpose? This panel aims to provoke discussion on the nature of critique itself, questions of radical purpose, and the urgency of development praxis.
Panelists:
Associate Professor Kuntala Lahiri-Dutt (Australian National University)
Associate Professor Yvonne Jasmine Te Ruki-Rangi-O-Tangaroa Underhill-Sem (University of Auckland)
Professor Michael Watts (University of California, Berkley)

Are you interested in rural livelihoods, sustainable development and the environment? Come along to our informal networking reception to meet with peers and discuss ideas. The event will provide the opportunity to expand your research connections through interacting with those interested in ‘environmental livelihood security’ - the links between livelihoods and food-water-energy security under the face of climate change. Both qualitative and quantitative geographers are welcome. Drinks will be provided for registered attendees. Registration is free.
