Student Housing as Social Opportunity. External Influences on International Students’ Housing Decisions (17256)

The presentation explores how and when external factors (institutions, policies, and other factors such as friends and family) influenced the housing decisions of international students attending universities in Melbourne. These external factors strongly impacted the majority of housing decisions and channeled international students into housing that is segregated from the local student population, contributing to the social segregation with the student body at Australian universities. Only a few housing decisions were made independently and without external influences.
