Remembering the floods: queer space, disasters and sites of memory (15681)

Scott McKinnon , Andrew Gorman-Murray , Dale Dominey-Howes

This paper presents early findings in a project investigating the impacts of disasters on LGBTI populations in the Antipodes. Although LGBTI populations experience a range of vulnerabilities in disaster contexts, those experiences remain under-examined. LGBTI voices are generally absent from both disasters research and broader disaster narratives. In this paper, we will explore ways in which disasters that cause material damage may also be seen to impact on spatialised LGBTI identities and to threaten queer sites of memory. Drawing on interviews with LGBTI individuals impacted by the 2011 Brisbane floods, we contemplate how material losses at various scales, including personal possessions, domestic spaces and community venues, may destabilise or threaten the queer memories and identities tied to those objects or sites.  The loss of possessions or spaces that held significance as queer sites of memory may exacerbate feelings of marginality and vulnerability for LGBTI individuals.
