A brief introduction to the proposedIAG Study Group on Hazards, Risks and Disasters will be followed by an open discussion of perceived needs, directions and ideas to develop further. Please join in! The proposal is based on our experience from attending past IAG conferences, which show a rich body of human and physical geographers in Australia working on a variety of topics concerning hazards, risks and disasters. To date, however, there has been no structured framework for the hazard and disaster conference sessions organised each year, nor is there an opportunity to join forces through a formalized support network. The proposed Hazards, Risks and Disasters Study Group will meet these needs. The proposed overall aim of the Study Group is to further research and education in the field of hazards, risks and disasters, by: a) creating and managing a forum for discussion and intellectual examination on hazards, risks and disasters in the Australasian region; b) encouraging and supporting scholarly research and study of hazards, risks and disasters that will contribute to increased societal resilience to hazards and their associated disasters; c) supporting and training the next generation of Australian hazard, risk, and disaster geographers; d) engage interest and collaboration in the research and study of hazards, risks and disasters in the Australasian region; and e) represent geographers with an interest in hazards, risks and disasters in the Australasian region.
