This paper critically focuses on interstitial housing space as a transformative area of everyday practice. An emphasis on interstitial space centres on those housing practices whose basic nature falls within and between the familiar boundaries of dwelling and home. As the paper explores, interstitiality implies a reconceptualization of housing space that lies somewhere between the ‘here’ and ‘there’, and notions of fixity and certainty. A transformative place, not just of alternative spatiality, but embodied with the prospects for alternative housing possibilities and practices at scale (Cruz, 2008; Frank and Stevens, 2007; King and Dovey, 2013; Yiftachel 2012; Zizek 2006).
